The Origins of a Myth: From the Diplomatic Gift to "El Laguito"“

The history of Cohiba has a unique charm, which began even before the brand had an official name. In the early 1960s, Bienvenido Pérez, head of Fidel Castro's security detail, gave the Commander A handcrafted cigar rolled by expert torcedor Eduardo Rivera. The appreciation was immediate, so much so that this exclusive blend became the diplomatic gift par excellence reserved for heads of state and high-ranking foreign officials.

In the mid-1960s, the need to ensure impeccable and constant quality standards led to the birth of the “School of Torcedoras”, a select group of women trained specifically for this niche production. The factory found its permanent home in the famous and eclectic villa located in the Havana neighborhood, El Laguito, the place where the beating heart of Cohiba craftsmanship still resides today.

It was Celia Sanchez, a key figure in the Cuban Revolution, who understood the need to formally name these very special Habanos. He chose the name Cohiba, an ancient term used by the Taíno natives to indicate the rolled tobacco leaves that amazed Christopher Columbus in 1492.

The secret of the blend: the unique third fermentation

What elevates Cohiba above any other premium cigar is the rigorous selection of the raw material and a production process unique in the Habanos universe. The leaves, grown on select plantations in the prized area of Vuelta Abajo, are rigorously worked “Totally Handmade with Tripa Larga”.

The real touch of magic lies in the additional fermentation to which they are subjected dry and the light, an exclusive step that gives Cohiba its unmistakable aromatic richness, perfect balance and extraordinary complexity, so sought after by aficionados.

The Cohiba portfolio: tradition and innovation in four lines

Over the course of sixty years, Cohiba has been able to innovate without ever betraying its roots, introducing revolutionary concepts such as the limited editions Reserve e Gran Reserva. Today the brand's portfolio is divided into four iconic lines, each with a strong personality:

4. Behike Line

Originally created in 2006 as a limited edition commemorative humidor (signed by the historic torcedore Norma Fernández), it became a regular line in 2010 and is considered one of the most exclusive Habanos ever. Its uniqueness lies in the introduction of the Middle Ages, a very rare leaf that grows only on the tops of some tobacco plants grown in the sun. The line currently includes four vitolas, among which the recent one stands out 58 BHK.
