The global slow smoking market is once again facing the scourge of counterfeiting. A recent and large-scale operation by Spanish Civil Guard led to the dismantling of a real clandestine factory of Fake Habanos located in Mixed, a municipality in the province of Valencia.
The investigation, coordinated by the Fiscal and Border Analysis and Investigation Unit (UDAIFF) in Valencia, uncovered a sophisticated criminal network that imported bandless cigars (not necessarily of Cuban origin) to then brand, package, and distribute them throughout the European market.
The seizure figures: over 600,000 rings and thousands of counterfeit cigars
The operation concluded with the arrest of three people and the registration of four others as suspects. The charges brought by investigators and filed with the Court of Llíria are extremely serious: criminal conspiracy, smuggling, industrial property crimes, and violation of workers' rights.
The numbers released by the Spanish authorities in the official press release outline the enormous scope of this black market:
- 33,840 puros seized in total, of which 27,852 were found in the Mislata apartment and another 6,258 intercepted in four postal shipments ready to reach various European countries;
- 637,646 counterfeit rings ready to be applied to neutral cigars. The counterfeiters imitated the logos and seals of the most prestigious brands in the Habanos SA portfolio, among which legendary names such as Cohiba;
- Industrial machinery for pressing, packaging, and applying warranty seals, all crammed into a residential apartment completely lacking health permits and business licenses.
The “modus operandi”: how fake Cohiba cigarettes were created
The technique used by the criminal organization is unfortunately not new to experts in the field, but the industrial scale on which it was applied is astonishing. The Mislata apartment served as the nerve center of packaging:
- The “neutral” import: the group received batches of cigars without any ring or identifying element, rolled with tobacco of a significantly lower quality and of dubious origin (far from the standards of excellence of the Vuelta Abajo);
- The dressing: thanks to an immense archive of over six hundred thousand fake bands printed at high resolution, the cigars were “dressed” to appear as premium editions;
- Packaging and seals: Boxes and warranty seals similar to the official ones were recreated to deceive unwary buyers and even retailers.
- Logistics: Using split postal shipments sent from the same sender in Valencia, the cigars were distributed throughout various European channels.
How to protect yourself from the counterfeit Habanos market?
This major seizure in Spain puts the spotlight back on the importance of traceability and the culture of slow smoking. For an enthusiast or collector, encountering a fake represents not only financial loss, but also a potential health risk, given that the tobacco used in clandestine manufacturing is not subjected to any phytosanitary or hygiene controls.
Tips to avoid falling into the trap of fakes:
- Purchase only from official channels: contact only specialized tobacconists, authorized La Casa del Habano retailers, Habanos Specialists or Habanos Points;
- Check the barcode: Habanos SA provides a guarantee seal with a unique barcode and hologram on each box. You can verify the authenticity of the box by entering the code directly on the official Habanos website.;
- Beware of “too convenient” prices: The Cuban puros market has very strict rules and price lists. If an online listing or a private seller offers boxes of Cohiba at a fraction of their true market value, it's almost certainly a fake.;
- Review the details: the perfection of the printing on the rings (reliefs, holograms, gold lettering) and the construction of the cigar itself are elements that are difficult for counterfeiters to replicate perfectly.
The brilliant operation by the Valencian Civil Guard demonstrates how crucial it is to maintain high vigilance to preserve the integrity and prestige of a historic sector that prides itself on craftsmanship and time.
